Boat Handling Online course

We are planning to offer Boat Handling (formally Seamanship) online, via Free Conference Call (FCC). Using FCC will allow the instructor to share his screen with students (PowerPoint slides, etc.). If students have a mike/headset attached to their computer, they can ask questions and/ or comment during this online course. You will thus only need to physically attend the final review/ exam. We hope this makes it easier for you to complete this very important course.

The online course will consist of seven, 2-hour segments plus the final exam. It will cover the following topics:

0–Getting Started, 1-Rules of the Road, 2–Confidence in Docking and Undocking, 3–Boating with Confidence, 4–Anchoring with Assurance, 5–Emergencies on Board 6–Knots and Line Handling.

The text for this course is an eBook (pdf) that you download from the National website (https:// www.usps.org/) using your “Ebook Key Redemption” code that we will provide to registered students. We also plan to offer this to other squadrons in our district. The headset/mike that I use is an Mpow 224, 3.5mm/USB for $25.00 on Amazon. Any earphones and mike that allow you to make a call with your computer should work. To sign up for Free Conference Call, which you will need to participate, go to https://www.freeconferencecall.com/ and create an account that is free and will also allow you to host free conference calls if you ever need to. Once you are enrolled in the course, we will send you an email invitation to join the calls, your Ebook Key code and thus the course sessions/material.

Each session will be recorded so if you have to miss one you can view/listen to the recording to catch up. Classes will be held on Thursday nights from 7:00 p.m. until about 9:15 (including a short break). The cost of the course will be $63.00 for a member, $78.00 for a member couple sharing the eBook (two separate exams for Seamanship credit) and $126.00 for a nonmember. We are also offering OnThe-Water training in conjunction with our ABC classes as mentioned above. Boat Handling students are welcome to participate in these On-The-Water training sessions as well.

If you would like more information on this completely new, revised, and vastly upgraded course go to usps.org, login with your member number (which you will need) and then go to Site Index > Boat Handling > and under Courses select Boat Handling. Under Support for Squadrons and Districts you can download a PowerPoint and view the “Boat Handling Preview Presentation” to get a feel for this greatly enhanced course.

The tentative course dates are Thursdays, March 14, 21 and 28 plus April 4, 11, 18, and 25, 2019 with the review/exam on Thursday May 2nd. If you have comments or questions please email them to D17 DEO captfarmer@navcal.com and let us have your comments.
